The World's Most Shark-Infested Beaches
When a lifeguard came to him, it was too late. Stephen Schafer was kitesurfing 500 meters off unprotected part of Stuart Beach in Martin County, Florida, last February when he was attacked by a swarm of sharks. "It was probably shortly after he destroyed a very serious bite," said George Burgess, director of the International Shark Attack File at the Museum of Natural History in Florida. Schafer was transported to a local hospital where he died from his injuries.
Although rare, shark attacks have been rising in recent years, with 79 attacks confirmed by ISAF in 2010, making it the most dangerous year for shark attacks in a decade.
But it is important to put these attacks in perspective. "Sharks are idiots," said Jason Clampett, editor of Frommers.com line, referring to their relative danger posed to humans. Creatures like jellyfish box-spread in Australia and the Philippines-kill more regularly and are more difficult to predict or to look out for, according to Clampett.
The water in itself poses no danger to humans as creatures who live there drowning claims the lives of over a million people each year, according to the International Life Saving Federation.
However, there are some areas that regularly attract sharks that swimmers should be aware, and we have identified with the help of Burgess, travel experts and ISAF data for 2010. It is difficult to find any range is more likely than others to be the site of a shark attack that sharks tend to avoid humans.There are some areas, however, which are known to attract sharks in large numbers, mainly due to the presence of seals and other animals that prey on sharks.
Florida is the place most likely in the world to meet the sharks. There were 13 unprovoked attacks in the state in 2010, down from previous years. The most famous beach that attracts sharks, says Burgess, is a hot spot of tourism in New Smyrna Beach in Volusia County, also home to Daytona Beach.
Hawaii, the southern and eastern coasts of Australia and South Africa are close behind.There were 14 attacks in Australian waters in 2010, against 21 the previous year. "In 2009, a wave of panic hit Sydney-siders," said Shawn Low, Asia-Pacific editor for Lonely Planet. "First, a shark attacked a Navy diver in the Port of Sydney. A day later, a surfer was attacked at the charge of Bondi beach tourism. "
The California coast has also seen its share of attacks, especially the waters north of San Francisco, where seals and sea lions that feed great white sharks congregate in large numbers.
