21 run or walk in resurrected Little Brown Jug 5K race
Runners and walkers get going on the Little Brown Jug 5K walk/run course bright and early Sunday morning at Riverside Park. Twenty-two people participated in the benefit for S.A.R.A. House, which was also a part of the Viaero Glenn Miller Swing Fest. The Little Brown Jug had been held in years past in conjunction with Fort Morgan's annual Glenn Miller celebration, but it had gone by the wayside before S.A.R.A. signed on, according to Swing Fest Coordinator Cathy Shull. Beautiful blue skies and warm weather greeted runners, walkers and even a man running while pushing a his son in a stroller at the re-established Little Brown Jug 5K held Sunday at Riverside Park in Fort Morgan.A total of 21 people were registered for the Little Brown Jug, and event organizers and representatives from sponsor Sexual Assault Response Advocates Inc. (S.A.R.A.) were happy with the turnout.
"If we stick with this and we`re consistent, then next year we`ll get more, and then a few more the next year, and so on," City Councilwoman and S.A.R.A volunteer Deb Forstedt said.
S.A.R.A. board member Andrea Strand participated in the race, instead of helping with timing the runners with her fellow board Shana Higa, of Phoenix, registers for the Little Brown Jug 5K walk/run Sunday as Jim Ramirez waits in line. Higa was visiting her sister, Dr. Aline Hansen-Guzman, in Fort Morgan and the sisters decided to run the race together. Ramirez ran in the race while pushing his son, Cade, 2, in the cart around the Riverside Park. Taking registration fees are Fabiola Rojas, in front at right, and Marylin Malone, both of S.A.R.A. members.
"I`m just excited to support S.A.R.A. in a healthy event," Strand said. "I hope that it takes off, that people come to Riverside Park and support S.A.R.A. It`s a wonderful cause."
"I`m glad they brought it back," said Fort Morgan resident Tyler March, who was the big winner in the race, clocking a time of 19:36 on the five-kilometer course.
Marsh said he appreciated that the race now benefits a worthy cause, like S.A.R.A.
Plus, he said, "it`s just fun to support the local race."
David Strand finished second overall, with a time of 21:02.
First, second and third place were recorded in a categories for men and women separated by age, and split between runners and walkers.
For male runners aged 30-39, Marsh finished first, followed by James Graff and Jeremy Reed.
Christopher Reeve was the only runner in the men ages 40-49 category.
