Using common kitchen ingredients for health
A small group gathered at the Louisburg Library on Tuesday evening to learn the ins and outs of simple herbal remedies as presented by Foxfire Herbals owner Jan Wallin. The presentation was the fifth adult event held as part of the summer reading program at the library. Wallin presented a bit of general information on using herbs and food to help alleviate common health problems, and she also provided an in-depth look at several powerful plants. Food is medicine, medicine is food, Wallin said. Wallin reminded everyone that the most important part of health is that the body has a balanced diet. Nutrition is where it starts, she added. She continued to discuss the differences between cultures that see a distinct line between food and medicine. Most cultures outside of the United States and England often blur the line between the two; they see food as medicine, she said. Many people in the United States eat whatever they want until a problem arises, and thats when they go to the doctor to get drugs to fix it, she said. Wallin encouraged everyone to try using natural remedies and to eat healthier to see if they can see positive effects before turning to drugs. Some of the foods and herbs Wallin covered were: Parsley: It can help with edema and also works well as a diuretic. Wallin said one of parsley juices biggest proponents was Jane Fonda, who was often concerned about every pound when she was on camera. Garlic: Often used to add flavor to food, garlic also has many medicinal values, especially in ear tissue. It enhances nervous system function in the ear, and because its anti-microbial, its quite effective in treating ear aches, she said. To treat an ear ache, drop garlic oil into the affected ear at bedtime, and results can be noticeable the next morning, she said. Garlic oil can be bought or made by simmering olive oil with one tablespoon of garlic and then straining it out. Garlic is also good for the heart, as it can control cholesterol and normalize blood pressure. To see the full effectiveness of garlic, five cloves of garlic are needed daily, but garlic tablets are also available to help reach that requirement. Food
When you know you will be out with the waves, avoid fatty and spicy foods for 24 hours. Eat a meal prior to your seafaring adventure. Bagels, oatmeal and bananas are great meal choices to fill your stomach before you head out on the boat.
Prevention
Prevention is better than a cure. Once you start to get sick, it is much more difficult to reestablish balance. Drink plenty of water to stay hydrated and avoid alcohol. Keep your eyes focused on the horizon or a fixed object on land, rather than focusing on the floor of the boat. Do not lie down. Stay on deck and in the fresh air. If possible, jump in the water when you start to feel ill to reduce seasickness and maintain equilibrium.
Herbal Remedies
Ginger is the most common herbal remedy used to combat nausea and vomiting experienced from motion sickness.
Try sucking on crystallized ginger or consume the root in pill, powder or its raw form. Consume ginger 12 hours before your boating adventure. Adding peppermint can also help relieve an unsettled stomach, but ginger is the preferred herbal remedy.
Acupuncture
Try wearing motion sickness bracelets, such as Queaz-Away, which stimulate acupuncture points. Wear one bracelet on each wrist. The studs on the bracelets need to be aligned with the p6 pressure point. Instructions on finding the pressure points are included with the bracelets. If you miss the pressure point, these are not effective, so follow the instructions closely.
