Books: 'Lions of Kandahar' to be released
A Fort Bragg officer's recounting of a definitive Special Forces mission in Afghanistan will be released Tuesday by the respected publishing company Random House.
"Lions of Kandahar: The story of a Fight Against All Odds" is by Maj. Rusty Bradley of Fort Bragg and former Observer military reporter Kevin Maurer.
Bradley was the leader of a Special Forces A-team sent in as a diversion as part of Operation Medusa, the NATO coalition's largest military offensive against the Taliban. The coalition forces found themselves up against resistance stronger than anticipated. Bradley's team assaulted a hill, and unexpectedly faced 1,000 experienced fighters in a firefight.

The authors of "Lions of Kandahar" will have two book events. A release party is Wednesday at 7 p.m. at The Country Bookshop in Southern Pines.
On July 15, the authors will be at Fayetteville's Barnes & Noble Booksellers at 7 p.m.
Maurer is also the co-author of "Valleys of Death" with retired Col. Bill Richardson. That book, released in December, tells about Richardson's survival as a prisoner of war in North Korea.

Today: Best-selling author Steven Pressfield will be at The Country Bookshop in Southern Pines at 3 p.m. with "The Profession," his modern war tale about mercenaries for hire set in the year 2032.
Monday: Chef Brian Sonoskus, an early advocate of the farm-to-fork movement, will discuss "Tupelo Honey Café: Spirited Recipes from Asheville's New South Kitchen" at 7 p.m. at The Country Bookshop. He will offer tastings of some dishes he created.
Wednesday: Rusty Bradley and Kevin Maurer will be at The Country Bookshop at 7 p.m. for the release party for "Lions of Kandahar: The story of a Fight Against All Odds."
Thursday: A discussion of "Chicora and the Little People," with author Arvis L. Boughman and illustrator/artist Delora Cummings, will be held from 2 to 4 p.m. at UNC-Pembroke in the University Center Annex.
July 11: John Milliken, author of a murder mystery based on a true story - "The Reservoir" - will be at The Country Bookshop in Southern Pines at 7 p.m.
July 14: Teens can chat with David Macinnis Gill, the author of "Soul Enchilada" and "Black Hole Sun, through Skype at 6 p.m. at the West Regional Branch Library.

Dennis Goodnough - Ft. Bragg Advocate-News
Dennis Walter Goodnough of Fort Bragg died Friday, June 3, 2011 at Sutter Memorial after a short illness caused by ARDS with underlying diabetes. Born on May 5, 1948 in Sacramento, Calif., to Ernest C. and Viola J. Goodnough, he was 63. A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m., June 25, at Chapel by the Sea, Fort Bragg.
Dennis grew up in Sacramento and Fort Bragg, graduating from Norte Del Rio High School in Sacramento. He was a service manager for Cal-Gas, Sonoma; Van Gas, Fort Bragg and Kemgas, Fort Bragg. He worked 40 years in the propane industry. A veteran of the Vietnam War, 1967-1969, Dennis received the National Defense Service Medal, Vietnam Service Medal, Vietnam Campaign Medal, and Medal of Honor Purple Heart. He received an Eagle Scout award in 1963 and an exemplary service to Music Department award in 1966. He was a long hauler, loved to cook, garden, be with family and friends. His special accomplishment was as a veteran of the Vietnam War and his proudest moments involved his five children.
Dennis is survived by his wife of 32 years Robin Christina Goodnough; children, Jarrod Vance, Jennifer Vance-Goodnough, Jonathan Goodnough, Joshua Goodnough, Justin Goodnough; grandchildren, Xavier Vance, Alizay Vance and Chance Vance. He is also survived by his siblings, Diana Dunning, Beverly Haskel, Bill Goodnough and his in-laws, Dan and Frances Adams.
His family would like to thank everyone who knew him.
