Chapter Three, part one

After a nap at home to keep himself on his feet, a shower and a change of clothes, Mason drove to Dyson’s glass studio for another look at the crime scene. A strange looking girl sat behind the front counter talking on the phone. He could see her through the glass door. She mouthed to him: We’re closed. Decorated by a lot of face metal, with purple lipstick and nails, her hair looked as though she’d taken a chain saw to it and then shellacked the hunks.

He held up his badge and her mouth made a big O.

She opened the door and said, “Really? Let me see it. I want to see your badge.”

“Yeah,” he smiled, holding it out so she could look at it.

She reached to grab it and he pulled it back. “It’s real.”

“Like, I mean, so you know what happened here, right?”

“That’s why I want to take another look around.”

“They put tape across the back room. Nobody’s supposed to go in there.”

“I’m the one who put the tape up, so don’t worry about it.”

“Oh. Nobody’s here but me,” she confided. “Judith went home. Everybody is totally weirded out but me. I’m like trying to feel her spirit.”

“Really? Any luck? She tell you who killed her?”

The girl sneered at him and flounced back to her desk. People got offended so easily these days. Since Diana had taken Haley and moved out, ragging on him about the job and a whole lot of stuff he’d never thought was important, Mason had begun to think more about his impact on people. Especially women. They were so touchy.

A heavy quiet filled the work area in contrast to last night’s brightly-lit circus. The shadowy gloom weighed him down with thoughts he couldn’t shake off: his daughter’s stomach aches because she didn’t want to go to school; Haley’s refusal to talk about what was going on; her oh-so-sweet, best friend Becky’s smiles when he came in the room. He felt like a big, galumphing cop, helpless to protect his own daughter.

He padded around, wondering what all the equipment was, stopping to notice the beauty of the glass objects lined upon shelves on the wall. He felt around for those vague thoughts and ghost trails that once in awhile boil up into something, listening for whispers from the walls. How had it gone down? Dyson opened the door to somebody. Somebody she knew. They chat awhile, something sets the killer off, tempers flare, things get said. It happened fast. Then? What happened then? The bad guy brought the knife with him. This was no box cutter somebody carried around in their pocket every day.
