Congressman presses for action on munitions in water near Verrazano
STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. -- Rep. Michael Grimm wants the Obama Administration to defuse the explosive situation under the Verrazano-Narrows Bridge.Grimm (R-Staten Island/Brooklyn) has written to incoming Defense Secretary Leon Panetta, asking the DOD to set a firm timeline for removing a cache of unexploded munitions found in the waters of Gravesend Bay near the bridge's Brooklyn tower.
The munitions -- a three-inch shell and 1,500 20 millimeter rounds -- were discovered by a diver last October.
The Coast Guard erected a safety zone around the area in January, restricting boater and diver access, but Grimm wants to light a fire under the feds to get the explosives removed.
Yesterday that safe zone was tightened, with the U.S. Navy asking the Coast Guard to keep all boats, divers and fishermen at least 70 yards from the base of the bridge until the explosives are removed.
"The establishment of this safe area clearly underscores the threat these munitions may pose to those traveling along or diving into these waters," Grimm wrote.
The diver who found the cache, Gene Ritter, told the Daily News that he thinks the cache may have come from a military accident in 1954 in which an ammunitions barge broke free in a storm.
Ritter added that he didn't think the waterlogged munitions were a threat to the bridge but that it was "better to be safe than sorry."
Maybe you should clam up since they have been there for 50 years already and NOTHING has happened. They built a bridge there and nothing happened. Maybe they should stuff them under your chair and blow one off to wake you up on the more important things. Do you think thats the only place in the world that has this? I'm sure there are MANY more undiscovered.
Ah yes, those shifty underwater Al Qaida; I hear Aqua Man is now numbered among their ilk. I'm generally one of the most paranoid people around, but The Man really has you shaking, huh? I'm no DOD agent, but I would think a bunch of soggy, dead ammo on the ocean floor would (a) not be as cost effective for terrorists to detonate as, say, a simple store-bought hand grenade on a city bus, and (2) not be an attractive target due to the low rate for potential casualties... unlike, say, a simple hand grenade on a city bus. Maybe you should park your mouth and think, and see if you want to post stupid remarks about other posters.
Agreed, johnnypaz. There is in Raritan Bay a huge no anchor zone from when the US government dumped munitions into the water. They're still there. New Jersey often sees old mines, shells, grenades, etc washed up on their shores. I don't see them panicking over it.
