What's Up, Doc? New Looney Tunes, With an Assist From Mel Blanc

That’s not quite all for the motion-picture career of the Looney Tunes, or for Mel Blanc , the versatile voice artist and comedian who helped bring to life the animated antics of Daffy Duck and Tweety Bird. Those speech-impeded cartoon characters, along with Sylvester the Cat, Elmer Fudd, Wile E. Coyote and the Road Runner are set to return in a new series of 3-D computer generated shorts that will use some vocals previously recorded by Blanc, and which will begin appearing with Warner Brothers movies in the fall, the studio’s animation division said.

The first of these shorts, “Daffy’s Rhapsody,” will find Elmer Fudd pursuing Daffy Duck during a musical performance and will include Mr. Blanc’s version of the song “Daffy Duck’s Rhapsody.” That cartoon is to make its debut on Nov. 18 with the Warner Brothers animated feature “Happy Feet 2.”

The other shorts in production are “I Tawt I Taw a Puddy Tat,” a showdown between Tweety Bird and Sylvester the Cat, which will include Blanc’s recording of the song of the same title (a three-million seller in its day – take that, Lady Gaga); and a Road Runner and Wile E. Coyote cartoon that does not yet have a title, but will almost certainly feature lots of backfiring Acme products.

The new shorts will be directed by Matthew O’Callaghan, and produced by Sam Register, Spike Brandt and Tony Cervone, who also produce the Cartoon Network’s animated sitcom “The Looney Tunes Show.
