Mountain View Grads Move On

But at Mountain View, they made the most of their new opportunities and thrived. And as Principal Dave Jagels said at the outset of last week’s ceremony at Oakton High, "To us, as educators, there are no finer moments than watching the culmination of our work, in the form of graduating students."

Fiorella Manrique Rodriguez, the first student speaker, said her high-school grades were average in her native country of Peru and she never challenged herself or worked hard. So when she came to the U.S. and got a job in a Starbucks, she didn’t understand when people gave her their drink orders. The more she worked there, the better she got, but she also realized she needed to learn English and go to high school.

"I had fun and started to lose the importance of my education," she said. "In my second year, I worked late and was too tired to do homework. But when I came to Mountain View, my skills improved and I was thankful for the help my teachers gave me. This year I reached many of my goals."

Manrique Rodriguez also enrolled in The Chantilly Academy’s pharmacy program and worked as a pharmacy technician at CVS – which later hired her. She now plans to go to college and study chemistry.

"Now I know anything is possible," she said. "Today I give this speech in English, and this school will always be in my heart."

Next, Aditya Patil shared his story. He was 18 and living in India with his divorced mother when she had a massive heart attack and died at age 43. "I lost my family and was alone in the world," he said. "She raised me, herself, and fought for me whenever I needed it. She trusted me — I was her friend and she was mine."

As a mother, she encouraged him to do whatever he did well and to do his homework. "I was never a serious student but, after she died, I had to become more responsible," he said. "I moved back to the U.S. My mother taught me to be cheerful and positive, and I want to thank her for making me strong and giving me so much love and caring."

Patil said the atmosphere at Mountain View gave him the push to move ahead. "Here, I learned to be independent," he said. "The teachers support us but, ultimately, the responsibility for finishing is in your hands. Being at Mountain View taught me to feel good when other students do well, too. It’s a family here and it felt like home. Let’s take what we’ve learned at the View and make our families and ourselves proud.
