Valley children learn essential etiquette skills in McAllen this summer
Tiny pink and purple flip-flops dangle from the fold-out chairs at Missy’s Modeling Studio in McAllen. Little hands are placed firmly on little laps, and not a slouch is in sight.
It’s the first day of a six-week summer etiquette class. Twelve little girls between the ages of 5 and 10 are learning the basics of sitting like a lady.
“You have to make sure you sit super pretty,” says Missy Vargas, instructor and owner of the school, as she inspects each student.
“Remember, when you go to church, school or a party, you have to make sure you sit really pretty.”
It’s a beginner’s class, and the students are shy and reluctant but focused. They sit quietly as they listen intently to Vargas’ instructions.
“Do we sit like this?” asks Missy as she slouches over in her chair.
“Do we walk like this?” She crookedly stomps across the room.
“No,” the girls chuckle in unison.
Vargas smiles and demonstrates. She reminds them the importance of having proper posture, especially when wearing a skirt or dress.
“I’m not here to make them supermodels,” Vargas says, “I’m here to make them super individuals. I’m here to polish their self-esteem and self-confidence.”
The McAllen mom has been teaching etiquette and modeling techniques year-round to McAllen students since 1995. By teaching her students the importance of social skills, etiquette, proper hygiene and community involvement, Vargas is helping mold the minds of Valley youth.
But Vargas admits she isn’t a big advocate of pageants and the modeling business, even if she teaches some pageant aspects in her class.
“Yes, I’m in the business, but I don’t recommend the business,” she said. “I don’t recommend pageants. I don’t agree with the fake teeth, spray tanning and fake hair. I’m more about the self-esteem and confidence and to have a competition in a good way.”
“I agree with pageants if you’re doing it for the right reasons: for confidence or to be more comfortable, stage presence, interview skills and the money, which should go for college.”
She asks each student to pair off in twos to practice introducing themselves to one another with a handshake. She emphasizes the importance of a firm grip, eye contact and a smile.
