Ghim edges Bullington in Illinois junior golf
The par-3 17th hole at Makray Memorial Golf Club made the difference in Thursday’s final round of the 42nd Illinois Junior Amateur.
Doug Ghim, a 15-year-old from Buffalo Grove, birdied it. Frankfort’s Brian Bullington, who came to the 17th tee tied with Ghim, double-bogeyed it. The three-stroke swing proved toxic to Bullington’s quest to win the state title.
He birdied the par-5 18th, but Ghim scored a two-stroke victory, with a total of 2-over-par 215 on the Barrington course to Bullington’s 4-over 217. Ghim shot 1-over 72 on Thursday, Bullington 73.
Ghim entered the final round tied with Lake Forest’s Ian Mankoff at 1-over 143, with Bullington, who graduated from Lincoln-Way East this spring, and New Lenox’s Gabe Aprati, a graduate of Providence, a stroke back at 144. In the final round, Bullington led by one or two strokes much of the way, and had a one-stroke advantage after a birdie on the par-5 15th. But a bogey on the 16th brought him back to 1-over, tied with Ghim, with two holes to play.
Ghim, whose second-round 6-under 65 set a course record for Makray, earned an exemption into next year’s Western Junior with the win. He was also due an exemption into this year’s Illinois Open, but qualified for that on his own on Monday.
Aprati scored 7-over 78 to finish fifth, at 9-over 222. New Lenox’s Evan Berna tied for 20th, closing with a 2-over 73 to total 231.
