Cool, wet weather won't be around Vacaville area long
Solano County residents and their neighbors across the Bay Area may be a little confused about the date. For the record, and despite the rainfall, it's still June.According to George Cline, forecaster of the National Weather Service in Sacramento, all those raindrops can be blamed on a deep, low-pressure area sitting off the coast of Northern California.
Throughout Tuesday afternoon, residents were subjected to the leading edge of the cold front, according to Cline, resulting in the need for umbrellas and raincoats.
"This wouldn't be unusual for January or February," Cline chuckled. "But this is kind of interesting for June."
In fact, it's an extremely rare event for this time of year.
Tuesday's rainfall marked the first time it has rained on a June 28 in Vacaville since 1991 and then only a mere .16 inches fell, according to the Farmer's Almanac online site.
Cline said that snow levels would be at higher elevations, most at or above 8,000 feet, by this afternoon or evening. However, it won't be significant enough to hinder traffic.
"Our biggest concern right now is heavy showers may cause some localized street flooding in the foothills and mountain areas," Cline Said.
Cline said to expect the dismal weather to stick around until late this morning or afternoon, when the slow moving system will have cleared the valley.
This isn't the first June storm to send residents in search of their umbrellas. The month got off to a particularly wet start when a storm dumped over an inch of rain on June 5, shattering previous records.
Cline said the Vacaville area has had about 1 1/4 inches of rain this month, closing in on the 1 1/2 inches record set in June 1967.
However, there is no need to change plans for the holiday weekend as summer weather will return in time for Independence Day. The Vacaville area should see temperatures in the 90s by Saturday, according to Cline.
"It's going to get hot again. We'll be back to July weather by the weekend," Cline said.
