Faucette takes the reins at Lutheran South

The coach’s office is tiny. 

There’s enough room for one desk and two chairs. 

A bookshelf sits above the desk and it’s bulging at the weight of all the books that are laid atop it. 

Photos frame the bookshelf. They are photos of easily recognizable people. There is one man who appears in each of them. He’s there with President George W. Bush. There’s another greeting President Barack Obama. There are snapshots of him with Alex Rodriguez and Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson. There’s a signed shot of legendary quarterback John Elway being dragged to the ground. 

That man is Chuck Faucette who, as of July 1, is officially Lutheran South’s new football coach. 

Faucette, 48, sits behind the desk explaining the pictures and the stories that go with them. 

He says that Bush was a workout machine who would run between five and six miles every morning. Bush, then governor of Texas, worked out with Faucette when he was a strength and conditioning coach at the University of Texas. Faucette shares the tale of how after Bush announced his candidacy for President of the United States he returned to Texas for his normal workout with Faucette. Except he had the Secret Service in tow and Faucette didn’t know this. 

Faucette nearly came eye-to-eye with the business end of the Secret Service’s weapons. That is until Bush poked his head out of the office he was in and told them “It’s just Chuck.”

The Lancers new coach cracks a wide smile at the memory of the former president. He says Bush was one of the nicest people he’s ever met. 

Faucette’s personality is as big as his office is small. At 6-foot-3 he takes up nearly half of the room when he leans back in his chair. A mountain of man, one look is all it takes to understand this guy is an athlete. His genetic coding is a little different from the rest of us. He was blessed in ways few people on the earth will ever fully understand. But for all his athletic gifts, there have been long nights and dark days on and off the field for Faucette.
