I enjoyed my time with Jo Berglund

On Friday night I had the pleasure of visiting with not only a long time alumni of Lakeland College but also a long time reader of the Vermilion Standard – Jo Berglund.

Jo graduated from Lakeland College in 1939 and now at the age of 89 she returns to the college every year to enjoy a weekend of friendship with other alumni.

We sat in the front entrance of the college where I expected it would be quiet. I soon found out it was also the best possible location for Jo to greet alumni as they came through the doors.

Everyone who came through the doors knew Jo and all had a memory or two to share with her. As they caught up on what was happening in each other's lives I sat back and enjoyed the conversation. Things have certainly changed at the college over the past almost one hundred years of its existence.

Jo recalled that Friday night students all walked downtown to go to the movies. No one owned cars and almost no students could afford a taxi so they all walked. Then every Saturday night a dance would be held at the school. Jo laughed as she recalled many of the boys didn't know how to dance but by the end of their time at the school they all could dance quite well.

Jo grew up in Mannville but she didn't get to go home on weekends as the many students now. She only went home at Christmas because those were the rules at the time even though her family was only 20 or so miles up the road. Although one would think it a terrible thing Jo says that was what made the students such a close-knit community. Roommates became friends for life and many marriages were flamed at Lakeland College.

As I walked the grounds of Lakeland College with Jo it was like taking a stroll with an old friend. She talked about the beauty of the campus, the friendly staff and how wonderful she really felt Lakeland College is.

In fact she carries brochures of the college where ever she goes. Just recently she had run out of brochures and it was a really shame because she ran into people at three different funerals who she wanted to give brochures.

My suggestion to the college is to get Jo to come back to Vermilion and produce a video of her talking about the college. Her love of the college is infectious and it is not just about the old days either, no, she loves where the college is going today and the classes it offers. She is current and she is relative to what is happening today at the college. She is an amazing spokesperson and I can't begin to tell you how much I enjoyed spending a few hours with her on Friday. She is an inspiration.

Coming of Age Story Reviews: A Mother in Mannville By: Marjorie ...

In the compelling short story, A Mother in Mannville, by Marjorie Kinnan Rawlings, the plot involves a young boy, Jerry, who develops a close relationship with the narrator. The narrator finds out that Jerry who acted honest and trustworthy told her a lie about having a mother in Mannville. This short story with its surprise ending is a boy’s coming of age genre meaning it is about a boy learning to live in an adult world. Throughout this short story, there is the theme of integrity and honesty. Remembering my trip to Cross Creek, Florida helped me visualize the narrator, Marjorie working at home with her typewriter. The rich use of adjectives about North Carolina and the orphanage helped me visualize where Jerry lived. I have never lived in an orphanage like Jerry did, but I can understand why he wanted to please Marjorie and why he was afraid of her knowing he didn’t have a mother. To me, Jerry lied because he was afraid the person he liked would leave him like his mother did. The irony is that by lying he lost his integrity which is what the narrator admired in him. The message the author was trying to share with the readers is that being honest with yourself and others is not always easy especially, when you are afraid it will spoil a relationship. Marjorie Kinnan Rawlings is best known as the author of The Yearling which is about another boy and his relationships. What I liked best about the story was the twist at the end. I really did not expect the narrator to be fooled by Jerry. So in conclusion, I feel this book is for anyone who likes reading stories about real life people and enjoys a twist at the end. I also recommend this story because it is one that will leave you thinking for a long time after you have read it.
