Review: Steve Martin, with the Steep Canyon Rangers

Martin had set a light-hearted tone right off, walking up to the mic, scanning the packed hall, and telling the audience, "If I'd known there were going to be so many of you, I would have practiced."

He then launched a thoroughly enjoyable concert in which terrific bluegrass music and deft comedy were both at home.

As other reviewers have noted, Steve Martin is a solid, if not stellar, banjo player. While he says in interviews he's a learned musician, not a natural one, he is a natural entertainer - and that's who and what the Midland crowd came to see,

But when Martin, alone on the stage, picked "Great Remember" in claw-hammer style, the technique proved evocative just as he had promised, nearly percussive as his fingers grazed the instrument on each return. Good stuff.

It would be a shame to overlook Martin's surprising skills as a tunesmith. All but one of the songs Friday night were his compositions, musically sound and entertaining, with titles and lyrics that bore trademark Steve Martin twists.

An example? The instrumental "Wally on the Run," which Martin said was inspired by his dog begging for a game of backyard catch while Martin was otherwise occupied. The superb fiddle player Nicky Sanders made convincing barking and whining noises to launch the tune.

Another? "Jubilation Day." Given the title, the genre, the band in suits and boots (the Rangers in black suits, Martin his trademark white), one might have expected a gospel-style number. Instead, it celebrated the departure of a once-loved one - this after Martin asked in his intro, "Is there anybody in your life you'd like to be rid of once and for all?" the deadpan band silently looked at him and the crowd erupted in laughter.

The band-based jokes were winners: Martin said he suspected the name of his splendid guitar player and vocalist Woody Platt had been selected by a computerized "bluegrass name generator."

All night long Martin made a show - we think - of tuning, futzing with his four banjos while bantering.

Each song introduction seemed to take a side road - the stories or jokes behind Martin tunes such as "Daddy Played the Banjo" (he tried to write a bad poem; "it became a bad poem but a pretty good country song"); "Me and Paul Revere," the story of that patriot's ride, from the horse's point of view.

The encore, Orange Blossom Special, was a home run with Nicky Sanders thrilling the crowd with fiddling that didn't sacrifice musicality for speed, although it had plenty of that - and snuck in crowd-pleasing snippets of tunes such as "Norwegian Wood," "Flight of the Bumblebee," and "The Flintstones." The song was only richer yet by the band's bluegrass harmony vocals, with Martin singing key phrases.
