Cute Fireworks Cookies for the 4th of July
Ingredients :
For the cookies:
1 cup granulated white sugar 1 cup softened butter 1 teaspoon vanilla extract 1 large egg 2 cups all-purpose flour 1 1/2 teaspoons baking powder 1/2 teaspoon saltFor the icing:
5 tablespoons meringue powder 1 pound powdered sugar 1/2 cup water Gel paste or liquid food coloringInstructions :
1. Start by preheating the oven to 350. In a medium-sized bowl, cream the sugar and butter until fluffy. Then, add vanilla and egg.
2. In a separate bowl, mix the dry ingredients together. Then, slowly incorporate into the butter mixture. Mix the dough until it comes together and is completely incorporated.
3. Remove the dough from the bowl, and roll to your desired thickness. Remember, they will rise just a tad in the oven! Cut the cookies into circles, using a cookie cutter or a water glass, and place onto an ungreased baking sheet. Allow to bake until the edges brown slightly, about 8 to 10 minutes.
4. Remove the cookies from the baking sheet, using a spatula, and put them on a wire cooling rack. Allow cookies to cool completely.
5. In a bowl (ideally an electric mixer), combine the meringue powder, sugar, and 1/2 cup water and mix at a low speed until you reach your desired consistency. RecipeGirl suggests the spoon test: Lift a spoonful of icing up from the bowl and let it drip back down. A ribbon should remain on the top of the icing for around 5 to 7 seconds. That's when you know it's perfect!
6. Divide the fresh icing into three bowls. Keep 2/3 of it in one bowl, and the rest between two others. Tint the smaller bowls, one red and one blue, to decorate your cookies.
7. To ice your cookie, place the white, undyed frosting into a pastry bag with small tip or a squeeze bottle. Start at the edges, drawing a white line around the cookie as a frame. Let this outer circle set for about 10 minutes, so you have a sort of natural barrier for the rest of the icing, which you'll put in the middle.
8. After you've waited, spoon more white icing into the center of the cookie, and use a spoon to spread across the surface. Then, squeeze a dot of color at the center of the iced cookie.
9. Draw circles of color around the dot (as seen here ) rotating red and blue, or however you'd like. To create the firework effect, drag a toothpick from the center of the cookie to the edge. Then, wipe the toothpick with a napkin or rag, and repeat. Feel free to mix it up, the more unique each cookie, the more fun! The cookies will take about 24 hours to harden, so make them in advance, and enjoy!

Blue Dot has been a little project of mine of the last couple of years. It is a powder with a lot of uses. Alliant (maker) recommends powder amounts quite a bit less than various manuals and adventurous handloaders. In general, 8 to 9 gr. of BD works quite well in the 45 ACP. More, with lead, seems to produce leading in many guns. Alliant recommended 8 to 8.3 gr with cast lead and 8.5 to 9 with jacketed. I have used 8.3 in both with good results. Heavy charges seem to lack the accuracy I get from other powders in heavier charges. I get a better burn and my accuracy with Power pistol has been better. With the Blue Dot I would always get a few flakes of unburns (nothing major just the beancounter in me) that I don't seem to get with PP. Accuracy can be rather subjective as we all have good days and bad days but overall I seem to do better with the PP loads. I had a pet 357 load of 10.2 gr of Blue Dot under a 158 gr JHP that my old 6" Security Six would shoot very well all day. I have tried that and other BD loads with both the GP and SP and accuracy is fine but with PP they tighten up a little. He told me that Alliant’s loadings run up to 98% of SAAMI pressures. New testing showed that some of the previously published .41 Magnum loadings exceeded that (though they were well under proof pressures). The gentleman mentioned what we’ve all heard before about there being new pressure-testing equipment and techniques, as well as different components introduced from time to time. When warning like this come out folks are ready to jump to conclusions without enough info. Not just on this forum but also on the Pro Guns Forum at the time of the warning. Ultimately, they just wind up being distracting chatter. Unfortunately, there is hard info out there, but you have to know where to look to find it. Had I not been the one to first post the warning, I would not have known about the subsequent discussion and the information one of the members got directly from Alliant.
