13 WTHRZionsville basketball player thrives after brain tumor surgery
ZIONSVILLE - A Zionsville High School graduate will play basketball for Depauw this fall. It's an amazing feat for Kristen Dickman, who was having seizures up to three times a week earlier this year.
"During practice, during games. It was happening so often. During tests at school. It was really strange," said Kristen.
She was on medication and even tried to keep it quiet. But then came a revealing event during the middle of a game on January 25th..
"During senior night, the night I had it, basically in front of everyone I know. I remember one of my teammates sitting me down and I was just so confused," she said.
Kristen typically had no memory of what happened, remembering only others' reaction.
"When I would have a seizure, everyone cried. Anyone who ever saw it cried. Like my dad cried and he never cried," she said.
"The low was the first time I saw her have a grand mal seizure and see her on the floor convulsing. You have no power to help her or stop her. It's not like they cut their knee; you can clean it up and put a Band-aid on it. You have nothing you can do," said Kristen's father.
Her pediatric neurosurgeon Jodi Smith, who works at Riley Hospital for Chidlren, ran multiple tests which revealed a tumor surrounded by tissue that was causing the seizures...
On Valentine's Day just weeks after senior night, Kristen went in for the delicate surgery.
Dr. Smith removed roughly a 4 X 4 cm piece from Kristen's brain.
"I knew I could do the surgery safely for Kristen. When she is in the or room with me it's like she is my own daughter. I am with her the entire time. I don't let her out of my sight," said Smith.
Since the six-hour surgery, Kristen has had no deficits or seizures and her goal of playing in college hoops is now within reach.

Brain tumor survival changes?I have a 21-year-ancient male supporter with a brain tumor- his symptoms are headache, nausea, personality changes, weird taste sensation, black-outs, consequence loss, and possibly mundane lobe spasm- the tumor is located in the “back” per CT scan- but I don’t know just so where. Still coming up on the MRI consequences. Do you reckon this might be cancer- if so, what kind and what’s the prognosis for someone experiencing this? Honest answers only please. Thank you! The symptoms you have told is just so of Brain Cancer. Secondly most of the tumors in brain area are malignant only. Itis very perilous disease and I have very just come obliquely a case (but aged abut 60). He had surgery and Radiation Therapy by he has slipped into coma stage. We do not know what will happen. We are giving all doable treatments as CANCER IS STILL AN ENIGMA and we have determined to fight it. Let us see. Are seizures a symptom of liver cancer? My mom has liver cancer, which they did not reckon had apply to anywhere else, even if the liver cancer is positively well ahead.
This daylight the nursing home called me since she had a grand mal spasm and were compelling her to the hospital for a brain scan. She had a brain scan a few weeks ago and it was clear.
Could the seizures be a sign that toxins are being paid into her brain since her liver is failing? Or is it more likely that the cancer has apply to her brain?
Or maybe it’s perfectly unrelated? She’s never had seizures previous to. They had just given her Vicadin for pain. All through and after the spasm her oxygen was only 85.
If anyone has encounter with this I would appreciate it. I know it won’t make any variation in her prognosis but I just like to have an thought what is going on. Thank you.
I would concidering going the all natural route. Start a healthful diet and drinks a lot of water, no alcohol, caffiene, or soda. I would also eat only organic food since of all the pesticides they are using on all the others. Organics do not use pesticides. Place anything in your mouth that is healthful. You doubtless need to do some soul searching too while you are in recover. Get rid of all the guilt, grief, hatred, covetously, ect. out of your mind body and soul. This will help you heal nearer. Positive thoughts make fastidious chemicals in our bodies that really BOOST your immune logic. The chinese have done many studies on this. Excellent Luck!
