Ernst: Englewood business prevents digital pickpockets

It's called electronic pickpocketing.

All it takes is a little know-how, a small computer and a scanner available online for about $100.

The threat emerged as card companies adopted a technology called radio frequency identification. Some of the latest generation of credit cards, passports, hotel room keys, driver's licenses and badges use the technology.

The idea to sell card shields evolved in 2005 from his libertarian background and his opposition to a national ID card. He heard the card would feature the RFID technology, and he wanted to protect his privacy.

As he realized the commercial potential, Augustinowicz quit his job as a computer programmer for an insurance company to found Identity Stonghold, which now employs 13 at a warehouse office in Paul Morris Industrial Park.

At first, card issuers denied that anyone could penetrate their security.

So, Augustinowicz started traveling the country conducting television news demonstrations. Typically, a reporter would accompany him to an airport or a busy street where he would "steal" credit card information from passersby.

Augustinowicz has been on Fox News, the Drudge Report and the Discovery Channel. In December, WREG-TV in Memphis, Tenn., aired a version of the electronic pickpocketing demonstration, garnering 1.2 million hits on his website within three days.
