Review: Action-Packed Resident Evil: Mercenaries 3D Is Undead Déjà Vu

Setting high scores is how you can unlock bonus content like extra characters, fancy new costumes and skills that enhance your abilities.

Fond of melee attacks? Use the Combat skill to give your punches extra power. Worried about zombie bites? Use the Toughness skill to decrease damage. You can equip up to three skills at once and they level up through use, offering bonus powers when they reach max level.

These light role-playing elements, in addition to the new ability to swap weapons between characters, add an extra layer of strategy and customization to a game that might otherwise become quite repetitive.

Inventory management is no longer an issue thanks to the 3DS touchscreen — just press a weapon to equip it. You no longer have a limit to the amount of ammo and supplies you can carry, and characters no longer go through an elaborate animation each time they pick up an item on the battlefield. This means you spend more time using your equipment to blow things away than you do collecting and organizing it.

Everything changes after the game’s first boss fight, however. From about level four onward, the enemies get tougher and the missions get longer. Mission 4-5 pits you against 15 waves of enemies that begin as cannon fodder but quickly power up with chainsaws and miniguns. At this point, you may want to phone a friend.

Given the importance of teamwork and communication, I recommend partnering with a friend in the same room.

Back in the day, I used to download save files for games on my Sega Dreamcast system so that I could access all of the unlockable content immediately. Sure, it meant having strangers’ names on the high score list, but it didn’t stop me from playing the game on my own.

Now that the game’s been officially released in the land of the rising sun, Capcom decided to release scans of the EX outfits as teasers as June 2, 2011 (release date for Japan) rolled by, up and until we finally have our full set of alternate costumes for all the mercenaries.

…Which I must say seem to have been pretty bad jokes or hasty attempts to get the job done. Seriously Capcom, why?

Then again, think of it this way, The Mercenaries 3d is really a means to answer fanbase demand for a stand alone Mercenaries game where we can simply go through wave after wave of enemies,without a story—and get away with it. Not to mention, it also stirs nostalgia in us at the good times.

However, these costumes just look—I’m at a loss for words. I am quite fond of Rebecca’s outfit though. Then again, despite being low tier, I’ve always had a soft spot for moe characters.

Here’s some short descriptions and insights, as well as trivia behind the costumes so far. They’re somewhat opinionated, you have been warned!

Barry – Patriotic ‘Warrior’ Costume – Only when he’s wearing it, seems more like something the Comedian from The Watchmen would wear. A lot of people would agree it looked a lot better on Chris. Claire – Business – The discarded costume for Jill for RE3 which was then given to Sheva on RE5. Why pants? Well, pants have always been Claire’s selling point anyway. Chris – BSAA Pilot – Makes sense since prior to his joining the policeforce (and Barry’s tutelage), he was with the Airforce. So him being part of the airforce of the BSAA is a reasonable move. The uniform isn’t very modern but early uniforms did have chaps. Jill – RE3 – No explaination needed. This was Capcom’s means to draw in both male and female audiences to the franchise: by making a heroine who was beautiful and stylish. Rebecca – Moe nurse (Sorry, it was begging to be called so!) Krauser – SOCOM x Riot Squad Hybrid – THIS costume really got me analyzing it like mad. He’s wearing light, highly stylized armor which reminds me frankly of riot squad gear and SOCOM gear mixed into one. Then again, the US SOCOM were charged with unconventional warfare, reconnaissance and anti-terrorism, etc. The duties of the US SOCOM are a hybrid of duties for war and peace.
