NEBRASKA FOOTBALL: Taylor Martinez Says It Was All A Misunderstanding

Remember the Nebraska – Texas A&M game last November 20th?

Yep. That’s the one. The Huskers lost that night, 9-6.

Equally as memorable, Coach Bo Pelini went off like a 1,000 pounds of skyrockets in the faces of officials and quarterback Taylor Martinez. It was that Saturday’s highlight of the highlight tapes.

There was and is a lot of speculation about what went on that day.

A few days ago Martinez talked about happened with CBSSportsline’s Dennis Dodd.

Martinez said he had hurt his [left] turf toe, and that a few plays later NU’s center stepped on him. Martinez came out, went and got himself X-rayed, and figured the game was over for him because he was in so much pain.

Note: Martinez also said he will be 100 percent physically for this season.

Here’s what he told Dodd:

"I was trying to walk to our locker room to feel it out. I plugged in my phone for the charger. It was on and it lit up. I saw it. I saw my dad called me. I called him back and told him I didn't think I was going back in. I couldn't move at all. I explained to him what happened."

People generally have the impression he called his father. Martinez said that’s not what happened.

“…. I got turf toe and he didn't know about that. He actually thought I tore my ACL or broke my femur or whatever. He was concerned like any other father would be."

Martinez didn’t think he would be returning to action. With a trainer standing next to him, he called his father.

"Coach Pelini misunderstood what one of the trainers told him [about] what was going on. That's when Coach Pelini came over and talked to me about it. He was heated because of everything going on, everything going on in the game."

Martinez did play in the second half but his performance was weak.

And UNL Chancellor Harvey Perlman publicly got after Pelini for the way he carried on.

Mike Freeman of CBSSportsline.com writes “One source with intimate knowledge of the discussions tells me (Freeman) negotiations are 80-85 percent complete. They’ve made such fast progress, I’m told, it’s catching many of the principals by surprise. Some are now canceling vacations, believing an agreement will be reached within a matter of days.”

Understand that the devil can be in those details that comprise the last 10-15%. And never underestimate the stupidity of one or two folks who feel the need to flex their muscle and ego.
