Katherine Morse: Nurse, cancer survivor used her experience to aid others
Katherine (Nicky) Morse dedicated her life to serving others as a professional nurse, a mother of six and a breast cancer survivor who used her own experience to motivate and encourage others toward recovery.
Mrs. Morse, who worked with several private practice physicians over a 20-year career, died Monday of congestive heart failure at her home in Rochester. She was 77.
"Katherine was a brave woman who served as a shining example of courage and how patients can learn to deal with illness both physically and emotionally," said Dr. Daniel White, a Rochester internist for whom she worked for several years. "She set a great example for other patients and was a tremendous role model for those who might seem a bit overwhelmed with their illness."
Katherine McArdle was born Nov. 4, 1933, in Montreal, Quebec, where she grew up and attended McGill University for several years before marrying Eric Morse in 1956. The couple moved to Rochester to accommodate his job as an engineer at Chevrolet.
Once her children were grown, Mrs. Morse enrolled in nursing school at Oakland Community College and received her degree in 1980. She had divorced her husband two years earlier.
"The fact that she had beaten cancer was always a quiet point of pride for my mother," recalled her oldest son, Ken Morse, who said his mother was diagnosed with the disease after starting nursing school. "She had to stop to deal with the treatment and still went back and graduated, which is quite an accomplishment."
After retiring in 2000, Mrs. Morse continued to be an active volunteer with several cancer support groups including Just Between Us and International Cancer Advocacy Network (ICAN).
Besides her son Ken, survivors include sons Christopher, Andrew, Gordon and Ian; a daughter, Elizabeth Fiorini; a sister; 13 grandchildren, and a great-grandson.
Visitation will be 3-9 p.m. today at the Potere-Modetz Funeral Home, 339 Walnut Blvd. in Rochester. A funeral mass will be at noon Friday with visitation preceding the mass at 11:30 a.m. at St. Andrew Catholic Church, 1400 Inglewood in Rochester.
The body will be cremated.
