Intel releases Core i7-980 processor
At the beginning of May, PC Magazine reported on new Core i7 model, coming between June 26 and July 2. The new processor, Core i7-980, was supposed to be a speed-bump version of the i7-970. Today, this microprocessor was added to Intel's official price list. The CPU has the same $583 price tag, as Core i7-970 model has had before. Interestingly enough, the i7-970 is no longer present in the pricelist. There were no price changes for existing Core i7 family members, or for any other Intel processors in the pricelist.
Intel Core i7-980 is a 32nm microprocessor, but it utilizes older Nehalem microarchitecture. With the exception of faster clock speed, the features of this chip are indistinguishable from the Core i7-970: 6 CPU cores with ability to execute 12 threads simultaneously, 12 MB L3 cache, support for SSE4 and AES instructions, and compatibility with socket 1366 motherboards. The i7-980 is clocked at 3.33 GHz, and, we presume, it has 3.6 GHz maximum Turbo Boost frequency. Seeing, that that there are no socket 1366 CPUs on Intel's roadmap, the i7-980 could be the last model for the socket. This translates into 2.5 years processor release cycle for the socket 1366, which is not as good as 6+ years for socket 775, although it's not as bad as 1.5 year life span for socket 1156.
