Symi Island Greece – a peaceful corner of Greece
Symi Island Greece is a small Greek island, part of Dodecanese chain. It is located close to Rhodes Island . Almost 100 years ago, Symi used to be one of the most flourishing islands in Greece due to the shipping and sponge diving activities, practiced here for centuries. It has a rich history and archeologists believe that is has been inhabited on a regular basis. The ruins of different fortresses show the importance of this island in time, which belonged to several major empires throughout history – the Roman Empire, the Byzantine Empire and the Ottoman Empire. In 1948 Symi Island was given back to Greece. In the 14th century it was conquered by the Knights of St John and starting from that moment it developed its harbors, becoming an important trade and shipping center.
Symi Island is mostly mountainous. Small valleys can be found in the center of the island and the shoreline is sprinkled with rocky cliffs and sandy bays. According to Greek mythology, Symi is the place where the three graces were born. It’s name comes from the nymph Syme, Poseidon’s wife.
Symi Island – touristic points of interestThis small island offers tourists several places they can visit. One of the most important touristic attractions on Symi Island Greece is the medieval Monastery of the Archangel Michael Panormitis (the patron saint of sailors), still inhabited by monks. This is an important pilgrimage place for Orthodox Christians. The monastery also offers an amazing view of the bay.
In Chorio there’s a small archeological museum that exhibits Byzantine and medieval archeological findings from the Symi Island. Among other points of interest worth visiting there’s a Maritime Museum in Nimborio (or Emborios) and the Knight’s Castle (an ancient Byzantine Castle built on Symi’s acropolis). The capital town of Symi has 13 important churches from the Byzantine period.

Symi Town is the island’s capital and main village. It consists of Yialos, a natural port, and Chorio, the picturesque, hillside part of the village. Yialos is a lively port with stunning architecture, sprinkled with souvenir shops, restaurants and bars. Chorio is more peaceful and natural. There are two significant stair paths made of stone – Kalí Strata (the good steps) and Katarraktes – that are frequently hiked by tourists. Chorio is also the place where you can visit the Archeological Museum and 12 beautiful churches.
