One Oklahoman says any amount of rain is appreciated
“We're under a pretty extreme drought,” Johnson said. “We've seen it in the past, and usually things come around for us. I know there are a lot of prayers going out for rain and I think some of them were answered last night probably.”
The Oklahoma Mesonet station for Chandler, located south of the community, recorded 1.25 inches or precipitation between Sunday into early Monday. However, Johnson said he believes that was very isolated. Totals he heard in Chandler ranged from a half inch to about 1 inch.
“The rains received by some parts of Oklahoma over the last couple of days are obviously welcome, but much too spotty to relieve long-term drought conditions,” said Gary McManus of the Oklahoma Climatological Survey.
Radar estimates and Oklahoma Mesonet weather network rain totals showed that a few spots received over an inch of rainfall.
Stuart in Pittsburg County recorded 1.22 inches. Other totals included 0.81 inches at Bowlegs and 0.77 inches at Freedom.
As the storms were building Sunday near Chandler, Johnson was hopeful for rain, but worried at the same time.
Johnson was so concerned and a lightning strike igniting a grass fire, he went out driving around.
"I went out to patrol around the area where the storm came," he said, "because the simple fact that I was afraid that lighting can strike and cause a grass fire before enough moisture get on the ground, because it's so dry. We do not have that problem, all I know. "
77% experiencing an exceptional drought
Drought has a very firm grip on the state, with 99 percent of Oklahoma in some rankings drought, according to the U.S. Drought Monitor.
This includes 77 percent of the state classified as severe to exceptional drought.
Hooker in the Oklahoma Panhandle, received only 1.66 inches of rain this year.
Arnett in western Oklahoma has received only 1.85 inches in 2011.
Chandler is currently among the areas of the state in the extreme drought category.
"We are very grateful for the rain, and hopefully get some more," Johnson said Monday. "I know it will not end the drought by any means, but every little bit helps.
"It's just a good drink.”
A weak surface front may approach northern Oklahoma by late in the week, bringing a slight chance of thunderstorms across northern Oklahoma, according to the National Weather Service 's Norman Forecast Office .
