Most schools make AYP
All Calvert County public elementary schools and five of the six public middle schools met Adequate Yearly Progress this year based on the Maryland School Assessments, the results of which were released Wednesday.
The school not to make Adequate Yearly Progress, or AYP, was Mill Creek Middle School, which did not make AYP in the subgroups of special education reading and math and students receiving free and reduced meals, or FARMS, in math.
Mill Creek’s MSA scores in reading and math did show growth in each grade when looking at the student population as a whole.
A press release from Calvert County Public Schools said AYP is required by the federal No Child Left Behind Act of 2001 and is measured through the MSAs in reading and math.
The release continued that according to the Maryland State Department of Education’s Maryland Report Card website, AYP is “the gain that schools, school systems and states must make each year in the proportion of students achieving proficiency in reading and math.”
The release said that as a part of No Child Left Behind the ultimate goal is 100 percent student proficiency in 2014 and, according to the Maryland State Department of Education, once a school reaches the 90 percent proficiency level, additional progress is difficult.
“We were very pleased with the growth across the board,” departing Mill Creek Principal Darrel Prioleau said. “As we get closer to 2014 the bar is going to get higher and higher … but we’re going to celebrate the successes that we encounter from year to year.”
The press release said approximately 93 percent of elementary and middle school students performed at proficient or advanced levels in reading compared to the state reading results of 88 percent for elementary students and 83.5 percent at the middle school level.
Ninety-three percent of Calvert elementary school students and 85.5 percent of Calvert middle school students earned proficient or advanced scores on the math assessment compared to 86 percent for elementary students and 74 percent for middle schools at the state level, the press release said.
St. Mary’s County Public Schools had 11 out of 21 schools not make AYP and Charles County had 16 out of 29 miss the mark.
For this year’s MSA scores, exact proficiency percentages were not given if they were greater than or equal to 95 percent.
Last year Mill Creek Middle School missed AYP in math for the African-American and special education subgroups, Southern Middle School missed for special education reading and Windy Hill Middle School missed AYP for special education math.
