South Floridians honor their patron saints

It’s a scorching hot and humid day for many Miami neighborhoods. But the Santa Barbara mounted on the sun-faded fountain doesn’t seem to mind.

Through the narrow streets lined with cozy bronzed houses and matching Spanish tiled roofs, statues of revered saints are a common sight.

In Little Havana, stands a Santa Barbara with a majestic disposition, draped in a red cape and sword in hand, behind the rusted black iron terrace. Across the street, rests a statue of La Caridad del Cobre, known in English as Our Lady of Charity. She smiles with a certain grace as the petals of the flowers she holds bake in the noontime sun. A life-size San Lazaro expresses anguish under a makeshift wooden shelter behind the chain link fence of a Little Haiti yard. He struggles with crutches under his arms and sympathizing dogs at his feet.

These are just a few examples out of the hundreds of statues found in Miami’s neighborhoods of Little Havana, Hialeah and Little Haiti. Kept near the windows are miniature white porcelain statues of La Caridad del Cobre as subtle reminders of religious devotion. Front and center near the driveway are San Lazaros greeting pedestrians in their glass cases. These statues reflect a multicultural character that differentiates these ethnic communities from the rest of the city.

Americans tend to regard religion as a private matter, but many immigrants from countries such as Cuba and Haiti, are accustomed to publicly expressing their beliefs.

“When you think about Latin American and Caribbean countries that are traditionally Catholic, religion is much more public,” said Dr. Michelle Gonzalez Maldonado, associate professor of religious studies at the University of Miami. “They’re taking that public expression and putting it out there in front of their homes.”

Among the many statues, the three most popular saints are Saint Lazarus, Saint Barbara and La Caridad del Cobre. Jason Ospina from Botanica Yemaya & Chango in West Miami, believes people purchase these saints for health, stability and prosperity.

“They pray to those saints in hopes of [being able to] get their homes and get themselves established here in the states,” said Jason Ospina from Botanica Yemaya & Chango in West Miami. “To pay homage to them they put these statues in front of their houses.”

Although Saint Lazarus, Saint Barbara and La Caridad del Cobre are Catholic, their images have been syncretized with the “Orishas,” or African spirits. Santeria, which derives its beliefs from the Yoruba religion, is intermixed with Roman Catholic customs to form a belief system that has influenced the Afro-Caribbean culture.
