Heritage and modernity can exist on Lansdowne
THE rattle of trucks labouring over Lansdowne Bridge is an all too common sound for Richard and Jane Carter. From their Victorian house nestled on the bridge’s eastern side, they have a clear view of increased traffic volumes and near misses. In frosty conditions and with poor sight lines either side of the structure, there’s high risk of a head on accident, says Mr Carter. “We need a new bridge for a new era,” he told the Post.
“There are a lot of trucks going over there and it is not designed for what we are asking it to do. It was built over a century ago to cater for horse and pedestrian traffic but its dimensions do not allow for buses and trucks and the explosion in traffic volume.” Mr Carter addressed Council last Tuesday, urging it to revisit the RTA’s proposal to repair the 1905 structure, rather than build a new one.
He did so on behalf of district livestock and bulk hauliers, school bus operators and “the ever increasing rural citizens in Bungonia and Windellama subdivisions.”
The RTA has designed a new bridge but shelved the idea in favour of conserving the historically significant crossing. But Mr Carter argues both can co-exist; the old one for pedestrians and cyclists, thereby preserving a piece of local history, and the new one for practicality. Retaining the old structure will do nothing to improve the Forbes St intersection, which doesn’t comply with safety standards, he says.
Mr Carter has already taken his concerns to Goulburn MP Pru Goward and has urged Council to seek a meeting with Roads Minister Duncan Gay to lobby for a new bridge. “The issue should not be clouded by heritage aspects,” he told councillors.
“In the short term we should ask for the present bridge to be fenced off upon completion of the new one.
“During the building time it would be hoped that heritage and tourist money could be used to reopen the old bridge for horses, pedestrians and cyclists – the purpose for which it was built.”
RTA representatives addressed a council meeting in May, outlining plans to upgrade the structure to survive the next 30 years. This includes a new surface made of concrete composite material over stress laminated timber decking, reinforcement underneath and steel guardrails.
At the time, Cr O'Neill said it was time for a new bridge was built, rather than opting for another patch "until use.

School bus dimensions are important if you want to put up a business for ferrying students to and fro. With a lot of buses around, you may have to check out the available choices for this to determine what size of the bus would be most appropriate for the number of students that you would be giving service to.
Measurements are usually done either by bus type or the number of passengers that you would opt to take.
Here are some of the details you have to know:
The Bus SizeTypically, the school bus dimensions would have these particular measurements: About 9.5 to 11 ft for its height, around 8 ft for its width, and a length ranging between the measurements of about 12 ft to 40 ft.
While that is considered a common type of school bus that you may want to choose for your school bus service, there are some who take the measurements around ten (10) to twelve (12) meters long which many bus drivers find easy to maneuver.
There are also other dimensions available which include: Measurements about 7980 or 8500 by 2400 by 3100 mm.
The Passenger SizeWhile the measurements outside is important to bear in mind, you may also want to consider the type of bus that you would choose to use for ferrying the students.
If you have a lot of students, then, a 72 passenger bus would be most appropriate. Others would opt to use a 77-passenger bus for more capacity.
There are also buses designed to carry around sixty five (65) passengers.
For just a handful of students, a bus with a smaller-passenger-capacity space would be suitable.
Typically, buses for schools would have a seating capacity of around fifteen (15) to ninety (90) people. Others choose to have around fifteen (15) to thirty eight (38) seating capacity. Some offer around twenty four (24) to sixty six (66) seats.
Aside from these things, there are actually five school bus types that you need to bear in mind: The Type A school bus which can ferry about 10 to 16 students, the Type B bus that can carry around 10 to 30 people, the Type C that can help transport around 10 to 54 children and teenagers, the Type D school vehicle that can carry 10 to 54 students, and the Type S which can merely hold up to 9 or less people.
The Inner CapacityIn line with this, the interior should also have its own dimensions to follow.
Some buses are built with specifications around 35’ by 7.5’ by 6.5’ for its measurements.
So if you want to get a school bus service, much importance should be placed at the appropriate school bus dimensions to safely carry and transport the passengers.
