Local boxing notes: Prospects to fight Friday in Fairfield

Several area prospects are scheduled to fight Friday night on the Fairfield Sports Center's fourth boxing card of the year.

Promoter Don Chargin, in association with Paco Presents and Jorge Marron Productions, plans an eight-round main event between welterweights Alan Sanchez (7-2-1) of Fairfield and Clint Coronel (4-2-2) of San Jose.

Co-featured is a six-rounder between super bantamweights Manuel Avila (4-0) of Vacaville and Salvador Cifuentes (1-1) of Chula Vista. Fighting in separate four-rounders are lightweight Guy Robb (4-0), junior middleweight Mike Ortega (1-0) of Sacramento and junior welterweight Omar Sanchez (0-2) of Fairfield.

Tickets, priced from $30 to $60, are available at JL Tepito Boxing Club and La Charrita Mexican Market in Fairfield and Paco's Mexican Restaurant in Woodland.

Local venues sought – Roseville-based promoter Nasser Niavaroni, who has held several fights in the Red Lion Hotel's 500-seat ballroom, is exploring new, larger sites for a proposed card in July. Thunder Valley Casino in Lincoln and the Doubletree Hotel in Sacramento are being considered.

Et cetera – Two Sacramento-area fighters will be inducted into the California Boxing Hall of Fame on Saturday in Los Angeles: former world junior welterweight champion Loreto Garza and former state junior lightweight champion Richard Savala.

• Light heavyweight Otis Griffin (23-8-2) of Sacramento, adamant about returning to the ring this summer, experienced only a slight slip to No. 8 in the International Boxing Federation rankings after recent hard-fought losses to the International boxing Federation's top two contenders, Yusaf Mack and Karo Murat.

CALCASA is preparing to release information regarding the upcoming Annual Meeting and Statewide Leadership Conference on August 2 – 4.

We are excited to once again host this year’s conference and bring together rape crisis centers, rape prevention programs and allied members from across California. This year’s theme is “The Evolution and Revolution of Our Movement.” After hosting last year’s National Sexual Assault Conference in Los Angeles, it became clear to us that the rape and sexual assault movement has significantly evolved since its birth 40 years ago. Additionally, our movement is now experiencing major demographic and cultural shifts that could potentially revolutionize how services are delivered to survivors from numerous communities, as well as how advocates and future leaders in our field are trained and empowered. This year’s conference theme and program reflects this unique point and opportunity in our field’s herstory/history to further advance the work each of us are doing to serve more survivors and to help end sexual violence in our state.
